Special events

The organizing committee is currently planning some special events beyond the technical program that would be of interest to attendees. You may contact our Local Arrangements Chair Jeff Hoehl for more information. To RSVP to the Wednesday afternoon SmartHome visit, please contact Enid Ablowitz at the Coleman Institute for Cognitive Disabilities.

Tuesday Night Research Showcase at University of Colorado

This special event on Tuesday night of the conference will feature posters and laboratory tours about research projects at CU Boulder, CU Denver (including researchers from "AT Partners"), and the Coleman Institute.

This event will be held on the evening of Tuesday, October 23, 2012, from 7pm to 830pm, at the Discovery Learning Labs on the University of Colorado Boulder campus. This laboratory is 12 minute walk from the hotel, with part of the walk along the "Boulder Creek Path," which is one of the must-see attractions in Boulder, Colorado. We'll arrange for some students to lead groups of ASSETS attendees to the labs that evening.

If you would like to arrange taxis (including accessible transit requests), then please send an email to Barbara Morris, our logistics chair. She can help you in arranging some transportation.

If you have a car, and you want to drive to the Tuesday Night event, parking is free in some lots on the CU Boulder campus after 5pm on weekdays. See this parking map:

Lot #436/494 is the best lot to park at if you brought a rental car to the hotel. This parking lot is free after 5pm Monday-Friday and all day on Weekends.

For ADA parking or for people with limited mobility, there is a closer lot, #437, which is just north of the building. This parking lot is free after 5pm every day.

Wednesday Afternoon SmartHome Visit

The ASSETS 2012 conference attendees are invited to visit the Bob & Judy Charles SmartHome, which incorporates cutting edge technologies to improve the quality and efficiency of service and supports for people with disabilities. This home was designed and is operated by Imagine!, which is a private, not-for-profit corporation that provides supports for people who have developmental disabilities.

The tour would be available in the afternoon of Wednesday October 24, 2012, immediately after the end of the conference technical program (approximately 3pm, specific time to be determined). The tour would last 45 minutes, and the tours would need to be concluded by 5:30pm.

It is important that you RSVP for this event by midday on Monday October 22 so that a headcount can be established. You should contact Enid Ablowitz at the Coleman Institute for Cognitive Disabilities to RSVP.

The smart home is less than 3 miles from the conference hotel, and rental cars or shared taxis are the recommended method of transportation. A public bus is also available. Here are directions from the Millennium Hotel to the Bob & Judy Charles SmartHome (1806 Iris Avenue, Boulder CO 80304). Parking information will be provided to those who RSVP.
